Wigan Volleyball Championship

On Monday 23rd January some of our boys and girls from Year 6 competed at the Wigan volleyball championships held at Abraham Guest Academy. This was a very special occasion for the school as it was the first time we had ever entered a volleyball team into a competition. The team was made up of Holly, Katy, William, Issac, Thomas and Nathan. The format of the competition was made up of two groups of schools containing five teams in each, with the top two teams progressing into the knockout stages. The schools in our group were St Aiden’s, Lamberhead Green, Woodfield and Newfold. Our team worked extremely hard during the group stage, gaining more a more confidence with the game as each match went on. After a loss in our first match (St Aiden’s) we managed to go undefeated for the remaining group matches, winning each with convincing margins. We were through to the semi-final to face Woodfield 1. The game was a very close contest with both teams remaining within one point of each other throughout. However, after some fantastic serving from Thomas, we managed to get ahead just before the end of the match. Amazingly in our very first volleyball competition, our team had made it all the way through to the final! In the final we faced St Aiden’s, in a rematch of the first match of the competition. Similarly to our semi-final, the game was very close and there wasn’t much between the two teams. It was amazing to see how much our team had come on in such a short space of time. As the final whistle blew on the game, the final score finished St Aiden’s 14, St Wilfrid’s 9. Fantastically, we had finished runners-up and won the silver medals! It was a magnificent achievement by the team in their first ever competitive competition. Well done!

We would love to hear from you
