Ofsted

Ofsted

We are really pleased to share the outcome of our recent Ofsted inspection, which was carried out under the new inspection framework.

The updated framework represents a significant shift in the way schools are evaluated. Inspectors are now required to make judgements based on an ‘exacting’ or ‘secure’ fit against the criteria, rather than the more flexible ‘best fit’ approach used previously. This means that standards are considerably higher, with schools needing to demonstrate consistently strong evidence across every aspect of provision.

In light of these increased expectations, we are incredibly proud to share that our school achieved five areas graded as ‘Strong Standard’ and two areas graded as ‘Expected Standard’. This is an exceptionally positive outcome and places St. Wilfrid’s in a very strong position compared with many schools both locally and nationally.

These judgements reflect the hard work, commitment and dedication of our entire school community. The ‘Strong Standard’ judgements recognise the high quality of education, care and opportunities provided for our children each and every day. The two areas graded as ‘Expected Standard’ confirm that we are securely meeting national expectations, with most elements of the higher standard already evident and only very ‘minor’ aspects preventing these areas from being graded as ‘Strong’.

For example, although inspectors recognised that children achieve well by the end of the Reception Year and are ready for Year 1, a new handwriting scheme introduced in the Early Years at the start of this year is not yet sufficiently embedded for its full impact to be fully evidenced. In addition, although inspectors noted that ‘pupils attend especially well’, they identified opportunities for leaders to provide more granular analysis of attendance data and for governors to strengthen their scrutiny in supporting this.

Importantly, the inspection recognised:

·      High academic achievement and strong progress
Pupils make consistently strong progress across all year groups and subjects. National test results have been considerably above average for the past three years, including for disadvantaged pupils, who outperform non-disadvantaged pupils nationally.

·      Ambitious and well-sequenced curriculum
Leaders have designed a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum that builds knowledge effectively over time. Reading is prioritised, foundational skills are taught well, and learning is carefully sequenced from Early Years through to Year 6.

·      Excellent behaviour, attendance and safeguarding culture
Pupils are proud to belong to the St. Wilfrid’s family; they enjoy school, attend very well and behave respectfully. Staff maintain high expectations, create a calm and orderly environment, and respond quickly to any concerns, ensuring pupils feel safe and supported.

·      Strong inclusion and support for vulnerable pupils
Leaders and staff know pupils’ individual needs well and provide effective support for disadvantaged pupils, pupils with SEND and those known to social care. Teaching is adapted carefully so all pupils can access learning and feel included in school life.

·      Outstanding personal development and enrichment opportunities
Pupils benefit from a rich range of cultural, sporting and leadership opportunities that develop confidence, resilience and social awareness. Activities such as music, theatre, sport, residential trips and community projects help pupils become well-rounded, respectful and socially responsible individuals.

While we are delighted to celebrate this success, we remain ambitious and forward-looking in our commitment to continual improvement and excellence. The new framework quite rightly sets aspirational expectations for schools, and we will continue to build upon our many strengths, refining and enhancing our practice further to ensure we sustain the exceptionally high standards across all areas and strong reputation of St. Wilfrid’s.
